That has slowly started to change in recent years, with manufacturers finding success in selling midsize pickup trucks to European buyers, particularly those looking for a vehicle that can be used for both business and pleasure. The open cargo beds found on a pickup truck make it easy to transport any number of items for work or personal use, and the smaller, sportier designs of midsized pickups make them more suitable for Europe’s transportation infrastructure.
Ford has seen its share in the European market increase, and its Ford Ranger has been named the best-selling pickup truck in Europe. Other manufacturers, including Isuzu, Nissan, and Toyota, offer pickup trucks for sale in Europe. Even names such as Volkswagen, Fiat, and Mercedes-Benz—manufacturers not typically associated with pickups—are getting into the European pickup market. In announcing its plans to offer a midsized pickup in the European market, Mercedes-Benz cited European buyers’ increased interest in pickup trucks because of their versatility, all-around utility, and payload of about one metric ton.
