Dynapac introduced its new Rhino CA55, CA65, and CA70 soil compactors last month in the 18-, 20-, and 22-tonne (19.8-, 22-, and 24.3-U.S.-ton) weight classes. These single-drum vibratory rollers are available with a padfoot drum (PD model numbers, such as CA55PD) or a smooth drum (D, as in CA70D) with the option of a padfoot shell that can be bolted on in four hours, the manufacturer says.

"We are thrilled to introduce the CA55-65-70 to the Dynapac Rhino range of soil compactors,” says Terry He, product manager at Dynapac Compaction & Paving Equipment. “[The] technology and features on these new models reflect our dedication to delivering top-notch equipment in our constant [striving] to meet and exceed our customer expectations.”

The new Rhino compactors will be available in Oceania, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Their manufacturer recommends them for road, dam, and airfield construction work and industrial development.

    Model Specifications

The Rhino CA55, CA65, and CA70 each have a 2,130-millimetre (83.9-inch) drum width. The three models’ inside turning radius of just 3.5 metres (11.5 feet) enhances the compactors’ ability to turn around on the jobsite. Dynapac says its goals in designing the new rollers included power, reliability, productivity, uptime, and compaction control in real time.

The 18-t-class CA55D and CA55PD Rhino have a static linear load rating of 56.8 kilograms per centimetre (49.3 pounds per inch) and theoretical gradeability of 50%. The 20-t CA65D and CA65D Rhino share a 64.8 kg/cm (56.2 lbs/in.) static load and 44% gradeability, and the 22-t CA70D and CA70PD Rhino is rated at 69.5 kg/cm (60.3 lbs/in) and for 38% grades.

All three new Dynapacs can deliver 231 to 339 kilonewtons (51,931 to 76,210 pounds-force) of centrifugal force and 1.1 to 1.8 mm (0.04 to 0.07 in.) of nominal amplitude.

    Dynapac Compaction Technology

The new Rhinos’ 154-kilowatt (207-horsepower), 6-cylinder Cummins engines produce up to 25% more power than the previous generation. The diesel motors are available with different emissions controls according to their intended markets. A 4-speed manual transmission allows the rollers to reach 11 km/h (6.8 mph).

Dynapac says operators of a new Rhino compactor can cut fuel expenses and emissions by up to 25% using its Dynapac Compaction Meter to avoid unnecessary passes. The DCM and its ground stiffness sensor work to ensure even compaction without weak areas. Also, the DCM’s Dynapac Bouncing Indicator automatically reduces the drum’s amplitude if it begins to double jump or bounce, which can compact the surface too much.

    Clear Sight Lines, Comfort Features

Dynapac designed a new operator station with 35% more glass area for its new Rhino rollers. A sloping engine hood and four standard LED working lights improve the driver’s view of the jobsite. The seat can swivel 60 degrees to the right to help the operator remain comfortable while manoeuvring around the jobsite.

The Dynapac Rhino CA55, CA65, and CA70 come with a rollover protection system (ROPS)-equipped operating station as standard. Options include an air-conditioned cab and a radio with Bluetooth device support. Another option is an anti-spin differential in the rear for better traction on slippery or loose ground.

Dynapac also offers smaller Rhino compactors such as the CA15, CA25, CA30, and CA35 models in the 6- to 12-t (6.6- to 13.2-U.S.-t) weight classes.
