JLG Reengineers Its SkyTrak 8042 Telehandler With Numerous Productivity Enhancements
JLG has redesigned and relaunched its SkyTrak 8042 telehandler, continuing the overhaul of the SkyTrak product line the company began in 2023 with the introduction of the new 6034 and 6042. The next-generation version of the 8042 has a new lightweight design, a hydrostatic transmission, an enhanced control system, greater manoeuvrability, an electric-over-hydraulic joystick, and a larger in-cab display with single-page load charts that immediately convey critical data to the operator.
“JLG redeveloped this model from the ground up with enhanced technology and functionality to meet the needs of today’s jobsites and zero sacrifices,” says JLG’s senior product manager for telehandlers, John Boehme. “We listened closely to our customers’ most requested features and capabilities to improve the efficiency and serviceability of the 8042, without any compromises. This model is designed to increase productivity and boost overall job performance in pick-and-place applications, such as handling, loading, and unloading bulk materials on demanding residential, commercial, urban, and suburban jobsites across America.”
A Nimbler, Lighter 8042
The new SkyTrak 8042 has a lift capacity of 3,629 kilograms (8,000 pounds), a maximum lift height of 12.9 metres (42.3 feet), and a maximum reach of 9 m (29.5 ft). JLG says it lightened the all-steel 8042 and reengineered its boom and frame structure without any loss of rated lift capacity. The boom has a simpler, single-compensation design with fewer components, as well as a top-mounted telescoping cylinder for easier maintenance access.
The 9,616-kg (21,200-lb) 8042 also has a narrower frame and smaller tyres that reduce the turning radius of the four-wheel-drive, four-wheel-steer telehandler. The manufacturer says two SkyTrak 8042 telehandlers can now fit on one flatbed trailer to minimise transportation costs.
The 8042’s Faster Boom Movements
The SkyTrak 8042’s hydrostatic transmission lets the operator take advantage of the new boom’s faster speed while inching the telehandler along, as it doesn’t require a shift into neutral. The machine’s electric-over-hydraulic joystick has a multifunctional design that puts attachment tilt and auxiliary hydraulic controls all in one hand.
The 8042’s now has 30% fewer hydraulic hoses and connections, according to JLG. Hydraulic attachment changes take no time, thanks to auxiliary connections on the side of the boom head. Other available attachments include various types of trusses, lifting hooks, forks, and carriages, as well as material buckets.
The new SkyTrak gets its impetus from a 74-horsepower (55-kilowatt), 2.9-liter Deutz diesel engine, which does not require diesel exhaust fluid (DEF).
SkyTrak 8042 Options
The new 8042 has an enclosed cab with optional air conditioning. A 3-view display option shows the operator a much broader view behind and to the sides of the telehandler from the day-or-night reversing cameras. An alarm sounds inside the cab if the reverse sensing system detects an obstacle in the machine’s path, while a white noise buzzer alerts others on the worksite that the SkyTrak 8042 is backing up.
Additional options include load stability indication (LSI), which rates the forward load capacity using colour-coded visuals, and a seatbelt engagement and operator presence (SEOP) system. The SEOP technology limits machine functions and engages visual and audible alarms if the operator doesn’t put on the high-visibility orange seatbelt.
Finally, the new SkyTrak 8042 supports JLG’s ClearSky Smart Fleet telematics system with wireless data collection, remote diagnostics, troubleshooting support, and more.
